Lesein grew up in Nairobi, Kenya. He is 17 years old and attends St Mary’s School, a private Roman Catholic primary and secondary school for boys with the motto “Goodness, Discipline, Knowledge”.
Lesein plays football with the Ligi Ndogo Soccer Club in Nairobi, nicknamed “Ligi” and “The Planets”. The senior team competes in the National Super League, the second tier of the Kenyan football league system. Several Ligi players have gone on to play at the international level.
As he told WWF Kenya, Lesein understood the impact of deforestation, climate change, and plastic pollution when he was about 12 years old. Since then, his top concern has become deforestation. Since 1963, Kenya’s forest cover has dropped from 10% of the nation to 6%, losing about 12,000 hectares annually. The main drivers are the population’s reliance on charcoal fuel, and the use of uncontrolled fires for land clearing to grow crops.
"My message to this generation is: Whatever small impact you make whether it is reducing your use of plastic, planting that one tree, or sharing that one story on social media just to create awareness, makes a difference."
At 15, Lesein took action. He decided to combine his love of football (soccer) and nature by committing to plant one tree for every goal he scored. The “Trees4Goals Initiative” was born and went public in 2018. Lesein increased his target as the enthusiasm grew; now he plants 11 trees for every goal. His skill at goal scoring is paying off: he has planted over 1,000 trees!

The Trees4Goals initiative won support from Lesein’s Ligi football club, St Mary’s School, and the local community to join in the tree planting and growing efforts. Public recognition was not long in coming. WWF-Kenya featured the initiative in their “Keep Kenya Breathing” campaign as did “National Geographic” in their “Special 50 Year Earth Day 2020.”
Lesein was invited as a Youth Delegate to the United Nations Youth Climate Summit in New York in 2019. The following year, he was honored with the “International Young Eco-Hero Award” and this year, he was named among the “Top 100 Africa Youth Leaders in Conservation.”
