Chapter 8 of 17
Cleaning up floating ocean plastics: The Ocean CleanUp with Boyan Slat

Boyan Slat

Age when he came up with the solution: 18

Location: Delft, The Netherlands

Boyan Slat is a Dutch inventor and entrepreneur who creates technological solutions for global problems. He is Founder and CEO of The Ocean Cleanup, a Dutch non-profit developing advanced technologies to rid the world’s oceans of plastic. At the age of 18, Boyan devised a concept which utilizes the natural oceanic forces to passively catch and concentrate ocean plastic, through which the theoretical cleanup time could be reduced from millennia to mere decades. In February 2013, Boyan decided to pursue the idea further and founded The Ocean Cleanup.

quotes

"Most things fail because people give up too early. Small failures along the way are part of the game when you are trying to do something new. Obviously, there will be things that do not work out the first time"

- Boyan Slat, Founder of The Ocean Cleanup

Boyan Slat's solution: The Ocean Cleanup

After four years of reconnaissance expeditions, testing, and design iterations, on September 8, 2018, The Ocean Cleanup deployed its first full-scale, experimental cleanup system, System 001, in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP). With the insights from System 001 (2018) and the subsequent System 001/B (2019), The Ocean Cleanup is now developing the latest iteration of the technology, System 002, which is expected to be launched in the GPGP in August 2021.

Meanwhile, the team had been covertly working on a solution to prevent river plastic from entering the oceans. It was in 2015 that the team decided that, to truly rid the oceans of plastic, The Ocean Cleanup must remove both the legacy ocean plastic and close the tap in rivers. On October 26, 2019, The Ocean Cleanup unveiled their invention to halt the flow of plastic pollution into the world’s oceans: the Interceptor. Interceptors are now installed in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Dominican Republic, and Vietnam, with more in the lineup for Thailand, Jamaica, and the USA.

As CEO of The Ocean Cleanup, Boyan oversees the strategy and technology development of the organization; by doing so, he has co-authored several scientific papers and holds multiple patents. His work has been recognized through many awards and accolades; such as being the youngest-ever recipient of the UN’s highest environmental accolade: UN Champions of the Earth. Pollution

It refers to pollution that happens when toxic substances enter water bodies such as lakes, streams, rivers, and oceans to the point where they interfere with the natural functioning of the ecosystems, degrading water or even contaminating it. These toxic substances get dissolved in water, lie suspended in it, or deposit on the water bed, impacting the quality of water and all organisms that depend on it. (1)

Water Pollution

Water is uniquely vulnerable to pollution because it is known as the “universal solvent”: it can dissolve more substances than any other liquid. (1) For this reason, toxic substances can easily dissolve into water and mix with it, leading to water pollution and the degradation of the quality of water. Water pollution not only disrupts aquatic ecosystems; the pollutants can seep through and reach the groundwater, which might end up then in our households as contaminated water. (1) Our drinking water sources are finite, as less than 1% of the Earth’s water is actually accessible to us. Without any action, the challenges surrounding global access to water will become worse by 2050, by which time the global demand for freshwater is expected to increase by 30%. (3)
